Learn to coexist with deer

White-tailed deer are the subject of the Walk in the Woods Nature Lecture on Thursday, April 19, with Lin Poor of Texas Wildlife Management presenting Co-Existing with Deer in the Burbs. Hosted at McCullough Jr. High School, 3800 S. Panther Creek, the presentation begins at 7:30 p.m.

White-tailed deer are a common sight in our area.  Does with a single fawn or twins are often observed browsing in open, grassy areas at the edge of woods during the early morning and evening hours.

“White-tailed deer are a keystone species that affects every other species in a habitat.”  Mr. Poor explained.

Mr. Poor assures that the swift-footed animal has adapted quite well to suburban life.  The noted authority explained, “At one point, we were looking at white-tailed deer as almost endangered in state.  The population numbered only in the hundreds of thousands.”

Human activities have changed the picture, with the removal of natural predators, reduction of disease carrying organisms and a ready supply of forage in residential landscapes.  “Today, the state of Texas has over four million deer,” Mr. Poor said.

An internationally certified wildlife biologist, Mr.  Poor provides a close-up view of white-tailed deer—their natural history, population characteristics and future in Texas. He will also share tips about enjoying nature, sharing turf with wildlife and deer-proofing landscapes.

The free program is sponsored by Community Associations of The Woodlands, The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. and Courtyard by Marriott. For more information, call Environmental Services at 281.210.3900.
